A Message from
Doug Seserman, President and CEO

Dear Friends,

Since last Monday, the Jewish Federations of North America have been engaged in a week of solidarity with Israel. Solidarity gatherings, rallies, prayer services, and community briefings have been organized in dozens of communities from coast-to-coast, including our own Community Solidarity Gathering on Monday night. Not only did our event draw a standing-room-only crowd of more than 1100 people, it was co-sponsored by a record number of local organizations—a true demonstration that our community is, as always, united in its support for the People and the State of Israel.

The homepage of our Jewish community’s website also contains important information and resources that will help you to stay informed about the situation in Israel and Gaza, as well as enable you to contact lawmakers and the United Nations to express your support for Israel. In fact, today, Israel needs our community to express its support for three important resolutions—one in the U. S. House of Representatives, one in the U. S. Senate, and the third in the United Nations.

Urge Defeat of the U. N. Resolution Condemning Israel

Today, the United Nations Human Rights Council met in emergency session on a proposal by Arab states and their allies to “strongly condemn” Israel for daring to defend its citizenry from unprovoked attacks by Hamas. The official subject of the meeting, initiated by Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, Russia, and other countries not exactly known for their own stellar human rights records is “The Grave Violations of Human Rights in the Occupied Palestinian Territory Including the Recent Aggression of the Occupied Gaza Strip.”

The proposed resolution "strongly condemns" Israel's actions, yet says not a word about Hamas, a terrorist organization that has fired thousands of rockets and missiles against civilians in the cities of Ashkelon, Ashdod, Beersheva, and Sderot, as well as other surrounding villages. By seeking to criminalize Israel’s right to self-defense and to implicitly legitimize Hamas terrorism, the text itself is a violation of human rights.

U.N. RESOLUTIONS MATTER. They are translated into every language, govern the discourse of international relations and human rights, and influence masses around the globe. Make no mistake: Iran, Syria, and Hamas will take note of this resolution, and especially of how European Union states vote! As documented by U. N. Watch in a November 2007 report, anti-Israel U.N. resolutions are routinely cited by Middle East extremists to convince their audiences that the world is with them. Please help us ensure the European Union will vote NO to this one-sided resolution by clicking here.

Thank Lawmakers for Resolutions Supporting Israel

Today, the United States House of Representatives passed H. Res. 34, a resolution recognizing Israel's right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza and reaffirming the United States' strong support for Israel. The resolution was introduced by a bipartisan coalition of House leaders led by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH). It calls on Hamas to end rocket and mortar attacks against Israel, recognize Israel's right to exist, renounce violence, accept previous Israeli-Palestinian agreements, and verifiably dismantle its terrorist infrastructure. The resolution also encourages the Administration to work toward a durable and sustainable cease-fire that prevents Hamas from threatening Israel in the future. Please contact your member of Congress and thank him or her for supporting the Pelosi/Boehner resolution.

Senate Passes Resolution Expressing Support for Israel

As Israel faces intense international criticism for exercising its legitimate right to self-defense, it is critical for Congress to speak out and demonstrate its support for Israel. These resolutions send a strong signal to Israel and the rest of the world that the U.S. government stands by Israel in her hour of need. Yesterday morning, the United States Senate passed the Reid/McConnell Resolution by unanimous consent, expressing the Senate's strong support for Israel during the current conflict.

Want to know what the 2008 General Election means to the Jewish community?

Join us at Men’s Event, Thursday, January 15, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, 7711 Academy Boulevard in Lowry.

Our featured guest speaker will be Rabbi David Saperstein, director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. Rabbi Saperstein will be talking about what the election means to the Jewish community, and considering the gravity of so many issues right now—including the economy and the current situation in Israel—his remarks are certain to be quite timely and insightful. In his role as the Reform movement’s lobbyist in Washington, Rabbi Saperstein has developed long-standing relationships with political leaders of both parties, including President-elect Barack Obama, and gave the invocation for Mr. Obama’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention last August. A prolific writer and speaker, Rabbi Saperstein has also appeared on Nightline, Oprah, The Lehrer News Hour, and ABC’s Sunday Morning.

Men’s Event is the largest annual gathering of Jewish men in Colorado, and this year’s event is truly an evening you won’t want to miss. Thanks to the continued generosity of Mizel Family Foundations, there is no cost to attend; however a minimum gift of $180 to our community’s 2009 Annual Campaign is requested. For more information or to make your reservation to attend, please click here.

It is during times like these that coming together as a community takes on even more importance.

Thank you to all of you who stood with us at our Community Solidarity Gathering last Monday. Thank you to all of you who stand with us by expressing your support for Israel to lawmakers, the United Nations, and the media. Thank you to all of you who will stand with us at Men’s Event next Thursday (and Choices next month) so that we can continue to provide the funding necessary to meet the needs of thousands of people across our local community—and millions more in Israel and around the world. We could not do what we do without you.

All my best to you and yours in 2009,
